Spy Kids: All the Time in the World Movie Review – Hollywood movie review Watch Online Movies

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 03:25 AM PDT

The Spy Kids series once seemed charmingly homemade. These days, it feels less charmingly homemade than maddeningly amateurish. The franchise similarly used to offer at least something for adults, but if Spy Kids: All The Time In The World aimed any younger in its puerile scatological humor and monosyllabic dialogue, it would be pandering hard to the pre-natal demographic. With its shiny colors, super-campy action, and villain who can't stop making terrible puns relating to his identity, Spy Kids: All The Time In The World provokes traumatic memories of another third sequel from a franchise that had similarly worn out its welcome ages before it stopped: Batman & Robin. Schumacher's infamous botch at least induced morbid fascination; this is just leaden kitsch clumsily conceived and painfully executed.

Brighton Rock Movie Review – Hollywood movie review Watch Online Movies

Rowan Joffe (son of Roland Joffe) provides busy, if never particularly distinctive direction, but it's the leads that continually threaten to sink the film. Riseborough never fully conveys whether her character is merely naïve or genuinely slow-witted, and Riley, in a role played by Richard Attenborough the first time around, is even more cryptic here than he was as Ian Curtis in Control. Joffe gets some mileage out of contrasting his beautiful face with the bad deeds his character commits, but Riley never provides much of a sense of what makes his character run, beyond brute ambition. Some veteran actors do much better work in supporting roles, particularly Helen Mirren, John Hurt, and Andy Serkis as a not-easily-flustered rival ganglord. And Joffe's decision to update the action from the 1930s to the mods-vs.-rockers clashes of the early '60s would be ingenious if Brighton Rock found a way to make that setting its own. Too often it just feels like its bloody-minded characters are enacting a too-thin story on the fringes of Quadrophrenia.

this thing work -- while the quality of the individual performances is uneven, you get a sense that each and every player is giving it his or her all, which goes a long way in at least maintaining a consistent tone throughout (a difficult thing to pull off in a comedy and often taken for granted). Even if the world these people inhabit is fractured, cartoonish and kind of stuck in a loop, they all seem to be at home in it. It's actually often a pleasure to watch this cast work, particularly Mulroney, forever doomed to be an underrated and underused talent ... you'll just really, really wish they had better material to work with.
