Overall, that last sentence is exactly what Super 8 is and should be: fun. It's for this reason some of the melodrama Abrams wedged in there doesn't really work. Luckily, that doesn't ruin the film as much as it's the thorn in its paw. Super 8 remains a good dose of entertainment, and while the homage to Spielberg is a bit gimmicky, it's the kind of film you melt right into, serving as a satisfying two hour distraction. SIDE NOTE: Don't feel the need to rush out of the theater and at least stick around for the first five-or-so minutes of the end credits.

The structure of this film is a disaster. Hammond should have become a major menace in act two, when Hal Jordan has his crisis of faith. This would allow Hal to overcome his fear to stop an immediate menace and give Hammond an actual point in the film. Instead the movie has Hammond subtly make a helicopter almost crash, and Hal doesn't even break a sweat saving it. It's not a real confidence-boosting victory.

Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), Mr. Popper's Penguins reins in its rubber-faced star, leaving most of the rote physical comedy (and overabundance of fart jokes) to his nonhuman counterparts, comprised of a combination of CGI and real penguins. The film's major setpiece involves the birds destroying a swank benefit at the Guggenheim by sliding down the spiral gallery and into an orchestra. It isn't a fraction as funny as an earlier throwaway moment in which Lansbury offers Carrey her hand and he bends to meet it, a frozen smile fixed on his face right up until he makes contact with a kiss. That bit is one of the few sparks of vitality in a film that can't seem to buy into its own strident message of "family first," possibly because to prove your love, you apparently have to risk the wrath of everyone from your co-op board to PETA.

That scene is gut-bustingly funny. The one that's giddily brilliant is the women's trip to Vegas for a bachelorette party. The entire sequence consists of the plane ride out there, and it's a tour de force, culminating in Annie's tranquilizer-fueled tirade against her rival. It's at this point, when Annie gives in to all the masochistic craziness that she's been feeling, that Bridesmaids begins to leave every cookie-cutter ''chick flick'' miles behind. Yes, the film is a romantic comedy, in which Annie meets a sweet Irish cop (Chris O'Dowd) and must figure out how to let her guard down. But its deepest romantic subject is the complicated friendships between women. Once she decides to stop being nice, Annie starts spreading disaster, and there's something very gratifying about seeing her lash out at this wedding, this life, and this lifelong soul sister, all of whom she thinks have left her out in the cold. She's an Everywoman you can believe in, showcased in the kind of deft comedy of feminine passion — where deep despair meets Wilson Phillips — that a great many people have been waiting for.
