Two supporting actors – Christopher Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu and Til Schweiger as Cagliostro – will be instant reminders, to some viewers at least, of another movie that took liberty with famous historical events, the delightful Inglourious Basterds, which doesn't elevate The Three Musketeers's B-movie status but rather encourages unwelcome comparisons.

Director Joel Schumacher's career has spiraled downward in recent years. Looking over his filmography I actually see several films of his I quite like — The Lost Boys, Falling Down and A Time to Kill are personal favorites of mine. How his career has turned into making what essentially is direct-to-DVD, bargain bin features is beyond me, but at least this one should hold some at home value for anyone looking to laugh at a bad movie.

Director Joel Schumacher's career has spiraled downward in recent years. One final clue in the mystery: Abduction's screenplay, by Shawn Christensen (otherwise known as stellastarr*'s lead singer), was secured by Lionsgate for $1m in one of those mythical bidding-war spec sales. Christensen is from Brooklyn, so it's more than possible that Abduction is a hipster's practical joke; "Let's write a terrible action movie and see if anyone buys it." At least, that's the theory I'm sticking with, because I can't live in a world where anyone could write "I'm not dying here: there's a bomb in the oven" with a straight face.
